Ancient Egypt, with its fascinating thousand-year-old culture and an important archaeological discovery are the undisputed chief attractions of the MUDEC autumn 2017 exhibition season.

“Egypt. The extraordinary discovery of Pharaoh Amenhotep II”, to be held from 13 September 2017 to 7 January 2018, tells visitors all about the life and figure of Pharaoh Amenhotep II, who lived between 1427 and 1401 BC during the so-called 18th dynasty (1550 – 1295 BC), son of the great Thutmose III and sovereign of a lavish court, the heroic central figure in an extremely rich historical period, to such an extent that historians have baptised it the “Golden Age”.

The exhibition will display artefacts from the most important Egyptian collections in the world: from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Stichting Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the National Archaeological Museum in Florence and the Giovanni Barracco Museum of Ancient Sculpture in Rome. These museums and other private collections have loaned for the occasion statues, slabs and weapons, items of daily life at court, burial assemblages and mummies.

The exhibition also sees the collaboration of the University of Milan, which will loan the original excavation documents for the Pharaoh’s tomb, as well as the collaboration of the Milan civic museums network, which is always very active; in particular the Castello Sforzesco Museum during the autumn-winter period 2017 will provide on loan some finds from the most important Egyptian collection, when it temporarily closes its exhibition rooms for renovation works.

In addition, an important contribution will be made by the multi me dia and scenographic equipment in the exhibition rooms, providing authentic immersive experiences that conjure up the warm and ancient Nilotic atmosphere of the Egyptian landscapes of the 2nd millennium BC, giving the exhibition a unique flavour, in the distinctive style of MUDEC exhibitions.

The exhibition, sponsored by the of Milan City Council Department of Culture and by 24 ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE, which is also the producer, is the result of a collaboration with the University of Milan. The curators Patrizia Piacentini (Holder of the Chair of Egyptology, UNIMI) and Christian Orsenigo (Researcher into Egyptology, UNIMI) have devised with the scientific coordination of the Egyptologist Massimiliana Pozzi Battaglia (SCA- Archaeological Cooperative Society) an itinerary that will combine scientific investigation with wonderment. The subject matter as well as the objects on display will in fact allow an approach that captures the curiosity of the general public while at the same time offering opportunities for research and deeper investigation to academics as well as to many other enthusiasts in the field.
